Agra, one of the three 'Golden Triangle' destinations that travellers tend to choose on a quick trip to India. While the Taj Mahal presents itself as an unmissable attraction (and it is!), my highlight of the city was actually one of the locals, our smiley auto rickshaw driver.
Every now and then you come across a local who really makes your trip to the sub-continent just that little bit more memorable. If you have travelled in India before you will be familiar with some of the difficulties that tourists face when agreeing on fair transport prices. Luckily, this red-shirted fellow was nothing but helpful!
While it's not always recommended to accept restaurant/shopping/sight recommendations from taxi drivers in India, we decided to trust our instincts and accept an offer to have lunch at Green Park Restaurant. Set in a peaceful garden, this restaurant serves delicious authentic Indian and is a pleasant escape from the busy streets of Agra. Thanks to our driver we tasted one of the yummiest vegetable thalis of the trip!
With our bellies full our knowledgeable driver took us around the city, pointing out interesting buildings, monuments and even slowing down for us to look on in awe at a family of six riding a single motorbike!
Our final stop was the Mehtab Bagh garden to the north of the Taj Mahal where we watched the sun set and the 'perfect jewel of Muslim art' bathe in the golden afternoon light. Without the advice of a friendly local, we never would have discovered these little spots in Agra. It was definitely one of my favourite days on the trip.
