Füssen, Germany

The main street in Füssen.

Füssen.

A German town about a two hour train ride south of Munich, and one of the earlier stops on my trip. If you have ever imagined or dreamt about a quintessential picturesque German town dotted with colourful buildings and cobblestone paths, this is it! Overshadowed by the majestic Neuschwanstein Castle, the town, although small, is a perfect weekend or two night destination.
The main reason why people visit Füssen is of course to venture up the mountain into King Ludwig II's unfinished masterpiece, the inspiration behind Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. There is an option to travel by a horse-drawn cart, bus or walk up to the castle. You can purchase a tour ticket for Neuschwanstein Castle for €12 or €23 for both Neuschwanstein and the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle.

Even if you decide not to take the tour through the castle (which I highly recommend!) the panoramic views from the mountain clearing are well worth the price of achy legs!

I loved this little gem however I would suggest that Füssen is a place to 'take a break' in on a longer trip or as part of a romantic getaway. The nightlife is not the best for younger people although in saying that I visited in September, just on the edge of peak season.

A little bit touristy, but well worth a visit!

Accommodation:

House L.A. City Hostel €18.50 - Very basic but comfortable enough. Be prepared for carrying luggage up lots of stairs. I was lucky to have a view of the castle from my room's window! No kitchen facilities.
Bavaria City Hostel-Design Hostel €24.00 - Really well appointed hostel! Great bathroom and bedroom facilities with lockers in rooms. Located right on the high street. No kitchen facilities except for an urn for hot water that was switched off at night.
